Martin and Judy were out when I arrived for my monthly gardening visit. Rather than starting work straight away, I sat quietly and a garden revelation occurred around me.
On all my previous visits, Judy and I always discuss how few birds we actually see in the garden, and what we should be doing to resolve this. I truly thought this garden was practically bird bereft ( apart from pigeons which always balance precariously on the perimeter fencing and magpies in the woodland surrounding the garden)
However within a couple of minutes of sitting quietly they started arriving. Robins, bluetits and blackbirds were foraging for food. It made me realise we have been doing all the right things to create a rich habitat for wildlife.
In essence all we really need to do is just spend more time quietly watching and appreciating all that we have created over the last three years in Martin and Judy’s new garden.
The moral of this very short garden story is that we all need to make time to stop, look and listen in our gardens and take it all in. You might even find your garden is actually a wildlife haven.
Apart from a spot of bird watching, it was a morning of planting for summer. Spring bulbs were removed from containers and herbs planted in their place.

Once work was complete,it was time to sit back and talk new garden ideas with Judy. Top of our list is to provide more bird baths, and to revamp the pond, as there is another leak in the liner. We are thinking of turning the pond into a bog, and the new bog project will commence on my next visit.
And finally to end on a question “When was the last time you just relaxed and enjoyed your garden space?”
