The 1st June is a day to celebrate the written word. When was the last time you put pen to paper ? It is now 5 years and 1 day later … I am still writing, sadly stamps are so expensive … I tell my friends they are worth it though . I am actually half way through a letter to write to my super friend Lou , I will stop blog procrastinating and get it finished and posted ( first class of course )
My school friends and I started writing as we headed off to Polytechnic thirty five years ago. We wrote regularly about overdue college essays, boyfriends, nights out, alcohol and lack of money amongst other things.
These days the content has somewhat altered. We write about our lives, ideas and thoughts. We still write about things that make us laugh out loud. We write to support each other in times of deep sadness and bereavement and we write to let off steam.Occasionally teabags and bags of Maltesers are included as an added bonus.
In their lifetime my parents were prolific letter writers. Mum used her Swan ink pen to talk to me about gardening and baking. Dad’s pen of choice was a Sheaffer, he was always mending things, or finding new car boot finds and reminding me to renew overdue library books.
Two of my most lovely school friends Mich and Fiona, write the funniest letters imaginable. My best friend Lou, has the neatest of handwriting – mine not so, but over the years she has learnt to decipher my sentences. Jan, my super gardening friend moved to Cornwall a few years ago. From the moment we met we never stopped talking about gardening. Our letters continue to be full of all things horticulturally related. The price of a first class stamp is presently 70p, which galls me. I think I might write a letter with my Lamy Safari to put my point across. I will request ( in my neatest handwriting) subsidised stamps for pen pals.
