A favourite winter job of mine is to defoliate perennials, leaving sturdy stems and seed heads to the winter sky.

I saw a fantastic interview with Piet Oudulf. When asked about cutting back, his comment was something along the lines of ” only do it when you are bored with what you see” Personally I find winter stems fascinating.
I recently bought an unmarked grass. All I do know is that the golden straw coloured stem stands nearly 2 metres, wafting aloft in my garden. I love it. Somehow I don’t think I will ever get bored with looking at it.
